Edible landscaping, permaculture, sustainable living coexist
Nothing tastes as good as food fresh from the vine, and those who work and live at the Sequatchie Valley Institute know this to be true. Located on the Cumberland Plateau, this 400-acre former homestead is now a learning center and model for sustainable living with rows upon rows of edible landscaping ready for the picking.

District Court celebrates Constitution Day with students
Ninety-five American history and government students from Central, Hixson, Oolte-wah, and Red Bank High Schools spent Sept. 17, celebrating the 223rd birthday of the United States Consti-tution with the U.S. District Court in Chattanooga.
Chief United States District Judge Curtis L. Collier opened court with an introduction to the purpose and power of the Constitution. He stressed to the students the responsibility they have to be informed citizens. Our constitutional republic, he noted, depends upon an informed citizenry and cannot survive without one.

What was happening in Chattanooga in 1960
Saturday, Oct. 15
Mrs. Mary Wheland Willingham, widow of Arch C. Willingham II, died Saturday morning in a local hospital unexpectedly. She was a member of one of Chattanooga’s oldest and most prominent families. Her parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Z.W. Wheland.

Under Analysis
Trials of a thoroughly modern man
Sometimes people will do things to try to make you feel stupid. That happened to me this morning. It’s actually a periodic event. You see, every few years my firm replaces our computer hardware and software, and then “trains” all of us how to use it. Because the firm now has offices coast-to-coast, I guess some “advanced” form of communication is required.

Good time to build a fire ring
I just recently completed a stone fire ring on my place that has with it history that dates back to the days before the Civil War. I used stones cut with chisel by farm labor in 1842 to construct a fireplace in the house that once stood where my house now stands today.

Southern Style
In recent weeks, I have seen a lot of great bluegrass performers honored in their craft and sharing their talents with enthusiastic audiences.
This adventure in musical joy began with the Front Porch Fellowship Bluegrass Gospel Music Awards held at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Ky.

Are we there yet?
It needs a little bite
My daughter Alexis came in the other night and after her mom served us up some great chicken cacciatorri, we decided to go to a movie. Alexis likes scary movies, as do I, but Kathy doesn’t so she stayed behind while we went to see “Let Me In.” (Spoiler alert – If you haven’t seen it and don’t want to know what happens, stop here and go read Vic instead)

I Swear ...
Hootch heists of boyhood
This week’s deadline finds Judge Fleming up against deadlines for the American Bar Association’s Traffic Court Seminar and the 2010 Clinton School Puzzle Festival. Thus, please enjoy a two year-old rerun. – ED.
Bill Bryson’s “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid”(Broadway Books 2006) is not as different from “50 Years as a Judge and Counting” (self-published 2007) by Lawrence E. Dawson, Jr., as the titles might suggest.

River City Roundabout
Creepy little town
With Halloween right around the corner, folks are looking for a few good chills. Chattanooga is brimming with
opportunities for fright like the
Ruby Falls Haunted Cavern and the Aquarium’s Thrills and
Gills, all a part of the Chatta-BOOga celebration this month. Yet, there’s also an opportunity out there for those who aren’t keen on the heavy scares but enjoy a good ghost story.

What’ll they dream up next?
Shake Weight
They say you should avoid conversations about religion and politics in mixed company. Although I’m fascinated by religion and wouldn’t mind a conversation about different religious experiences at any time, it’s never really a problem for me to skip out on the political topic of conversation.

Rock City earns the Shining Examples Award, mystery shop top score
By Erica Tuggle
For nearly 80 years, Rock City has been a beloved tourist attraction for the entire nation, more than earning their recent recognition as the Southeast Tour-
ism Society’s Travel Attraction of the Year.
The Shining Example Awards have been presented annually since 1985 by the STS, an organization dedicated to the promotion and development of tourism in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Over half of these states can be seen from the top of Lover’s Leap at Rock City!

Spread the word: City of Chattanooga Pipe Band is must-hear sensation
It’s a rare opportunity to see a pipe band live and in full uniform. Usually, you’d have to travel to Atlanta or Knoxville to see such a band, but now the secret is out. Chattanooga has its very own pipe band, and these guys are a talented and professional bunch.

Challenges at home and work energize local broker
To Mike Lane, broker and operations manager of Robinson Real Estate, the details of what he does are not as important as his reason for doing them.
His description of his job is the definition of brevity: “We have a team-based approach. I take the bumps out of our system so it runs smoothly.”

Stinson philosophy: simple life, simple words to live up to
Instead of telling you the awards she has won as a multi-million dollar producer for Prudential Realty, Karen Stinson would rather show you a plaque on her desk made by her daughter Meredith, who is now a senior at Carson Newman College.
The piece is simple and elegant, with a black frame and flowers that frame the words Stinson takes to heart: “Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”

The Bookworm
"Save the Assistants"
“Save the Assistants:
A Guide to Surviving and Thriving in the Workplace”
by Lilit Marcus
$14.99 / $18.99 Canada
241 pages
It was never something you aspired to.
When you were a child, you never thought, “Gee, I want to be an office assistant someday!” You never played assistant-dolls or drew pictures of your future cubicle. Even in college, becoming an assistant was never on your radar.

Real Estate Facts
Questions and answers
We all know the mantra of real estate: location, location, location. The neighborhood is usually the most critical factor in determining a home’s value. When you begin your home search, you should create a list of criteria for the neighborhood in which you want to live, work and play.

Kay's Cooking Corner
I struggle with weight, you struggle with weight (if you’re honest), your aunt struggles with weight, your mom, dad. Face it, you don’t have to watch “The Biggest Loser” to see that everyone struggles with weight. Some for as little as five pounds and some as much as 500 pounds, although I don’t think the 500 is the norm.

The Critic's Corner
For most people, life proceeds along a predictable path: college, job, marriage, kids. There are slight variations, but for the most part, having children comes after falling in love and getting married, or at least falling in love. It’s the natural order of things.
