Hunter Museum earns Southeastern Museums Conference honors

The Hunter Museum of American Art is the recipient of five Southeastern Museums Conference awards, one for publication design and four for the use of technology.

The SEMC technology and publication design competitions recognize excellence and innovation in the use of technology, communications and graphic design and provide benchmarks for regional publication efforts in southeastern museums.

The Hunter received a gold award for gallery installations, silver awards for digital marketing and media production, and bronze awards for virtual media and posters.

“These awards acknowledge the outstanding efforts of museum staff to create and design engaging digital materials and dynamic publications to enhance the guest experience,” says Virginia Anne Sharber, Hunter’s executive director. “The Hunter is honored to be recognized by SEMC for our work.”

The 2023 SEMC competitions received a record-breaking number of entries from a wide variety of museums across the Southeast. With technology continuing to gain importance throughout the museum field and resources being poured into documenting exhibitions through high-quality design and publications vital to institutional missions, expectations and standards were exceptionally high for this year’s applicants.

For the technology competition, winning entries were expected to demonstrate innovation, effective design, accessibility, creativity and recognition of institutional identity. For the publication design competition, recognizing excellence in graphic design, applicants were judged on communication, effective design, creativity and pride of work, and recognition of institutional image and identity.

Award winners will be celebrated at the 2023 annual meeting awards ceremony Nov. 15 in Louisville, Kentucky as well as in the Fall 2023 Edition of INSIDE SEMC, a digital publication of the Southeastern Museums Conference. This designation recognizes the Hunter Museum’s contribution to professional standards in southeastern museums.
